What Muslims believe

The heart of the faith — and the practices that carry it.

One God

Muslims believe in one God — Allah, which is simply the Arabic word for God: the same God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Islam teaches a direct relationship with the Creator, with no intermediary.

The prophets

God sent prophets to every people — Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them) among them — all carrying the same core message. Muslims believe Muhammad ﷺ was the last of them.

The Five Pillars

Five practices anchor a Muslim’s life: shahada (faith), salah (five daily prayers), zakat (giving to charity), sawm (fasting in Ramadan), and hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime, if able).

The Qur’an

Muslims believe the Qur’an is the literal word of God, revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over 23 years and preserved unchanged since. It is read and recited daily by well over a billion people.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Born in Mecca over 1,400 years ago, he taught mercy, justice, and devotion to one God. The “ﷺ” after his name means “peace be upon him,” a blessing Muslims say out of love and respect.
